The Comunidade Intermunícipal do Médio Tejo (CIMT) follows on the extinct associations Associação de Munícipios do Médio Tejo and the Comunidade Urbana do Médio Tejo, respectively, in order to promote the balanced and sustainable development of its intervention territory, based on regional strategic planning and support for local authorities. This combination of multiple purposes was established in 2008 by the Legal Regime of Municipal Associations (Law 45/2008 from August 27) and established as a legal person of public right by the publication of the respective statues in DR nº 233 II Series December 02, however replaced by the one published in the Official Gazette on January 8, 2014.

Its governing bodies ensure the achievement of the strategic objectives defined for the Middle Tagus region through the respective assignments, including the executive of the Intercity Council, the Intercity Secretariat deliberative and the Council advisor for strategic Intercity Development. The work carried out jointly by the entities that comprise these organs (associated municipalities) focus on the enhancement of regional identity, coordination and optimization of public services, encouraging cooperation of local and regional actors and motivate business competitiveness.

The geographic area covers 3344.0 Km2 in the centre of the country and includes the municipalities of Abrantes, Alcanena, Constância, Entroncamento, Ferreira do Zêzere, Mação, Ourém, Sardoal, Sertã, Tomar, Torres Novas, Vila de Rei e Vila Nova da Barquinha, a total of 247,330 inhabitants (census 2011).
